I couldnt believe how easy it was to setup, even with making mistakes along the way. If anyone has an older spare pc and is on the fence between this and a synology/qnap device, I would recommend this instead. With the server up and running, I then installed unRAID onto the USB drive, linked the Pro license to it, set the BIOS to boot from the drive and I was up and running. The docker community support and installation is also really good. Love how its customizable, for example you can use SSD as a cache disk and set it up so it only spins up mechanical drives periodically to move data to them. You can have a mixed bag of drives, as long as your parity drive(s) are the same size as the next biggest data drive you're good. In addition to plex server, mine has docker containers are also running nvr software, nginix/letsencyrpt, pihole and homeassistant. While it isnвЂ™t free, it does have a bunch of very useful features which make Unraid worth the price you pay for it.

Check the unRAID wiki documentation for instructions on how to access the server UI and set all this up. A share appears as a single folder that spans across all drives.

Unraid is a Linux-based operating system optimized for network-stored media files. Easy to use/setup, great community behind it that answers any questions.
